To carry

Have you ever thought of a morning that you realise your computer or your lappy wouldn't work anymore? How do you feel in such an occasion? Yesterday, after sharing all types of devices by which we can save our research progress stuff and concluding that we are better to email them every night before shutting down our laptops, my friend told me that he would have a heart attack if he loses his files!! It seems interesting to me that we are bound to walk all our documents, the ones that identify our social identities, everywhere with us. We have files everywhere, in our mobiles, USBs, Laptops, home computers, at work, almost everywhere!! If we leave our mobile phone at home one day, we feel like losing a leg or an eye!! If our laptop battery is broke it means everything is stopped for few days. What items get out of a PC owner if he/she loses his/her personal computer for ever:
Photos
Diary
Personal document files
Downloaded files
and .....

My question is that why we became so attached to our mobile information and documents? How come these items became mobile? Why we don't carry our passport or national identity papers everwhere but we carry our documents and USBs which carry our social identities?

These are the points that we never think of because they change rapidly from time to time and change our habits with them. The fact is that these rapid changes and not thinking of them leave us with loads of social problems and at last they change our culture in a way we never can find out the exact reason. It's not just the job of experts to reflect on these discourses and contexts but it's also related to the people who consume such habits and cultures.
To avoid dispersion I bring out the question one more time;
Why do you think we are depended this much to carry all our social identity indicators like our photos, our documents, etc.
It would be good if you thought of any more items to be added to my list of stuff we save in our computers and we would lose them if our computer stops working.

If I woke up and found the technology around me dead, I think I would feel like a limb had been amputated. For example, when I'm on holiday with only a book and a nice view to occupy myself with, it takes a while for me to get used to that lifestyle. It feels simulateanously like a return to some form of innocence, but also unnatural.
Perhaps that says something about how helpless humans are made by our dependence on technology? Or perhaps how our integral our use of technology in our identity and lifestlye. Is this a positive or a negative thing, do you think?

-Ella

P.S. I discovered what happend last time - I previewed my comment but didn't send it. Apologies =)

Nazanin said...

Thanks Ella,
I can't say it's negative because it's becoming 'normative', neither I can say it's positive because when people depend so much on one thing it automatically detaches them from so many basics, as you said like nature. But, in overall, what I think is that technology has a progressive effect on human life which causes a sort of isolation which is no good from the view of social relations. Consider mobile phones which direct you only to the person you like to talk to, while before you might have had a chat with another member of the family to direct you to your friend. This is a little example of the kind of isolation that technology offers to us. Though, no one can deny its goods and benefits. Thank you for your attention Hon.

first I want to say sth. about that isolation you were talkin about.
Although it's not good from the view of social relations,I think it's benefits are double!
imagine you're on a bus and an old man/woman is sitting next to you, trying to communicate
about the subjects you don't like at all. Here u have 2 choices:
First: Use your cell phone as a music player to create yourself a "privacy" u prefer in this situation.
& Second: U have to communicate with a person that wants to talk about sth. u don't like at all.
Now the choice is yours...
(Consider this just as an example)

Dear Arash,
Thank you for your comments. I write this in English because I know Ella and others like to read what we exchange. I think you are right, these things are becoming unavoidable parts of our lives. The problem or better to say the issue is the limits that we don't consider for these devices to control our everyday lives. Everyday a new device comes to the market of technology and everyone looks for the newest design or the latest facility. The other Arash told me the other day that there are two groups who never capable of following the latest fashion, first group are those who are very fond of fashion and the second are the ones who neglect fashion. And I think it is very true because you never can say which one is the latest one. So, why we should seek for the facilities in a way that we can't control our everyday needs. The more you look to be fashionable the more you become a good member of 'consumerism'. Consumption might be the main reason which leads facilities to capture our lives. About carrying and USBs and such stuff I think we are going to be impossible without our belongings. We are going to be impossible without our 'connections'. We are communicating creatures but why we can communicate just through our objects?
These are my thoughts and I appreciate yours.
Thank you for your contribution. It means so much to me.
Good Luck.

This may not be relevant, but on the subject of technology/modern society creating isolation, a lot of Japanese novels/films (e.g. Kairo [Pulse], Jisatsu Sākuru {Suicide Club]) deal with that subject because I think that sort of thing leads to some big social problems in their society like Hikikomori (extreme social withdrawal - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikikomori). Just thought I'd mention that if you anyone wanted to look further into that perspective on modern technological life.
